Counseling

Counseling is provided to victims and survivors of both Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault. Counseling is provided free of charge. Our counseling services provide emotional support and empathetic listening to clients.

Domestic Violence Counseling includes:

  • Crisis intervention counseling to address the immediate needs of the victim.
  • Education about the dynamics of domestic violence.
    • power and control
    • cycle of violence
    • common feelings of a victim of abuse
    • safety planning
    • pattern changing
    • boundaries and assertion
  • Emphasis is place on giving the victim accurate information about domestic violence and supporting the victim in the decisions that are made.
  • Assistance to victims in breaking the cycle of violence.
  • Identification of needs and offering options.
  • Assistance to establish a support system.

Sexual Assault Counseling includes:

  • Crisis intervention counseling to address the immediate needs of the victim.
  • Ongoing counseling to assist the victim in dealing with the feelings and reactions of being assaulted.
  • Emphasis is placed on giving the victim accurate information about sexual assault and supporting the victim in decisions that are made.

Support groups are also offered for victims and survivors. Groups are facilitated by a staff person and offer a setting consisting of peers who are also experiencing the effects of abuse. Support groups offer many learning opportunities as well as support and empathy for participants.
