OUR HISTORY

Family Crisis Centers of NW Iowa, formerly the Domestic Violence Aid Center, was established by a group of volunteers in 1982. DVAC was developed after some concerned citizens began to recognize the need for services to assist victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Northwest Iowa. During its beginning stages, the agency was operated from donated office space in Sioux Center. Through the years, the agency has developed into a program serving victims and survivors in Sioux, Lyon, O’Brien, and Osceola counties.
In 1998, the name of the agency was changed to The Family Crisis Centers of NW Iowa. An office/shelter complex was constructed during the Spring of 2001. After outgrowing theses accommodations, funds were received through state grants and corporate and personal donations to construct Project Hope in 2009. Project Hope will offer three levels of housing opportunities for victims and their children (emergency shelter, emergency housing, and transitional housing) along with an education center and office complex. FCC’s main office remains in Sioux Center, with outreach offices located in Rock Rapids, Primghar, Sheldon, and Sibley. Currently, the agency’s nine employees and approximately 70 volunteers continue to provide 24-hour service to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in the four-county area.
